How to Register and Use Korean Air SKYPASS Family Miles as a Multinational Family

If you’re an international family like us, navigating airline loyalty programs can feel overwhelming. But when it comes to Korean Air’s SKYPASS program, registering as a family and using miles—even across different nationalities—is easier than you think.

In this post, I’ll share our personal experience registering as a SKYPASS family, including what documents were needed, how long it took, and how we successfully used miles to book flights for our family. We live in Brisbane, Australia, and often travel to Korea and Europe—so optimizing mileage is a must.

Why Our Multinational Family Chooses Korean Air

We fly Korean Air regularly for several reasons:

  • Only direct flight from Brisbane to Korea (excluding budget airlines)

  • Easy connections to Europe, especially France — we can book a single ticket for Brisbane → Korea → France

  • Family mileage pooling is allowed, even for children

  • Free hotel layovers in Incheon — when flying long-haul from Australia to Europe, Korean Air offers complimentary hotel stays (usually Hyatt) for overnight connections, which is incredibly helpful when traveling with kids

✈️ Tip: When we flew Emirates in the past, our son Liam couldn’t register for miles because he was a minor. Only my partner could earn miles, and we’re not even sure they’re still valid today.

Bottom line: Sticking to one airline loyalty program pays off over time.

How to Register for Korean Air SKYPASS Family Program

If you’re considering family mileage pooling, here’s what you need to know:

✅ Eligible Family Members

You can register up to 5 family members, including:

  • Spouse, children, parents, siblings

  • In-laws (parents-in-law, sons/daughters-in-law)

  • Grandparents, grandchildren

✅ Registration Methods

You can apply via:

  • Korean Air official website

  • Mobile app

  • Customer service centers (excluding airport offices)

✅ Required Documents

  • Proof of relationship (e.g., birth certificates, family registration documents)

  • Each person’s SKYPASS number

  • Family registration form

✅ Processing Time

Korean Air states 3–5 business days, but in our case, the whole process was completed within half a day.

Our Family’s Registration Process

We are a Korean–Australian family of three living in Brisbane:

Liam (son) ↔ Me (mom)

  • Documents submitted: Liam’s Australian birth certificate + both passports

  • Even though we’re both Korean citizens, it’s hard to get a Korean family certificate in Australia.

Eddie (dad) ↔ Me (mom)

  • Documents submitted: Liam’s birth certificate + both passports

  • We’re not married, so we don’t have a marriage certificate. But since both parents’ names and birthdates are on the birth certificate, that was sufficient.

Registration time: Just a few hours  fast and straightforward.

Booking Flights Using Korean Air Family Miles

⚠️ Important: Booking Rules

  • You cannot book multiple passengers on one SKYPASS account

  • Each person must log in separately and book their own ticket

  • However, you can use miles from registered family members during checkout

Since I’m linked to both Liam and Eddie, I can share miles with either of them.

How We Actually Booked Our Flights

At the time of booking:

  • Eddie and Liam were not registered to each other

  • Liam didn’t have enough miles

So we did the following:

  • My ticket: Booked using Eddie’s miles

  • Liam’s ticket: Booked using my miles

The Korean Air call center guided us through the process. Even though family mileage sharing is allowed, tickets still need to be booked individually. The agents helped us reserve seats and explained how to issue the tickets online without the ₩30,000 service fee that applies to phone bookings.

How to Use Family Miles at Checkout

Once family registration is complete:

  • During payment, the system automatically displays available miles from registered family members

  • You can select whose miles to use and how much to apply

How to Book a Child’s Flight Using Miles

  • Children cannot book flights alone — they must be booked together with an adult

  • Booking order matters:

    1. Book the adult’s award ticket first

    2. Then book the child’s ticket

When logged into the child’s account, you’ll be asked to enter the guardian’s details (name, birthdate, ticket number, etc.).
If the guardian is already registered as family, their name will appear for easy selection.

Tips for Booking Mileage Award Flights

  • Taxes must be paid separately, even when using miles

  • Mileage requirements are the same for adults and children

  • Taxes are slightly lower for children

  • Avoid peak seasons, as they require more miles

We’re traveling in December, which is peak season. Even so, using miles for our child’s ticket still saved us a lot—so it definitely felt worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can foreign family members join the Korean Air SKYPASS family program?
→ Yes, as long as you provide valid documentation (e.g., birth certificate), it’s not a problem.

Q: Can I use my family member’s miles right after registration?
→ Yes, you can use their miles immediately once registration is complete.

Q: Can I book a child’s ticket using miles?
→ Yes. Just remember that a child must be accompanied by an adult. Always book the adult’s ticket first.

Final Thoughts

Registering for Korean Air SKYPASS family mileage is a smart move—even for multinational families.
With just a bit of preparation, it’s not difficult at all. If you’re living overseas or have family members with foreign nationality, this program can help you save a lot when booking flights.

Long-distance routes like Australia to Europe also mean you’ll rack up miles quickly.

This is a really good guide. I am indeed struggling to book a SkyTeam award flight for me and my family – 3 of us.

Booking from individual accounts is the key here. A question, though, does that mean there will be 3 PNRs – one for each traveller?

    • Min young says:

Thank you for the comment! If you are booking through your korean air account, and using your airline mileage points, then yes! you need to make a separate booking for each person. That means you will have three PNRs. You’ll need to log in to each account and book the tickets individually, or you can call the customer service center to make the booking. But some other airlines are allow you to book all in same time with one PNR. you need to check with your airline you would like to go. I hope this help!

        Hey, thanks for your response.

I am planning to redeem for Delta. My family includes a minor child as well, so it seems it would be better to call the customer and redeem miles.

You also mentioned you can save ₩30,000 in service fees while issuing tickets. Can you please explain that?
