Our First Thailand Adventure with a 4-Year-Old

The reason we chose to fly with AirAsia was because, after the pandemic hit, many flights were canceled, and we had over AUD 2,000 worth of AirAsia credit that we needed to use.

To fly directly to Thailand with AirAsia, it was only possible from Sydney Airport, so we had to make our way to Sydney.

Sydney

It was exciting to visit Sydney again after a long time!

We took about 10 hours to get from Brisbane to Sydney, with a one-hour break for lunch and some rest along the way.

The weather was rainy and not great, but we still went to the Opera House and took some photos with Liam to create lasting memories.

We spent two days at a friend’s house before heading to Sydney Airport for our flight to Thailand.

I had pre-booked airport parking, and the cost for 11 days was AUD 250.

Booking Sydney Airport Parking

Considering the price of taking the subway from the city to the airport, it wasn’t a bad deal at all.

The parking lot was inside a building and connected to the airport, so it took less than 2 minutes to get to the terminal.

With a child, we had a lot of luggage, so parking at the airport and checking in right away was incredibly convenient.

When we arrived at Bangkok Airport in Thailand, we rented a car at the airport. It was so easy to grab our luggage and load everything into the rental car right away.

At AirAsia check-in, they even offered us the seats behind us, giving one of us three seats in a row!

When the plane took off, I noticed that the flight was less than half full.

So, even though we were flying with a budget airline, Eddie and I took turns lying down and had a really comfortable trip.

Jet Kids by Stokke

I used the Stokke Jetkids last year during our trip to Europe and was really satisfied with it, so I knew it would be perfect for this trip too.

It’s a must-have for kids, especially when the gate is far from security, and they don’t want to walk. It’s so handy! Plus, on the plane, you can tuck it under the seat and take it out after the seatbelt sign turns off, which makes it super easy to use.

With this, my child can entertain themselves while waiting at the airport, and when they sit on top, I can just pull it along, which makes everything so convenient.

The airport floor is smooth enough that it glides easily, but the one downside is that sometimes, if you turn too quickly, it can lose balance.

But by the time they’re around 4 years old, they can balance it themselves, so it’s not really a big issue.

We arrived at Bangkok Airport at 1 AM Australian time (10 PM Bangkok time), which was right in the middle of bedtime. I was worried that my child wouldn’t wake up.

Now that he’s 4 years old and weighs a bit more, carrying him through a large airport would have been tough for me.

Luckily, even though I had to wake him up, there was no whining at all. He happily sat on the Stokke Jetkids and we were able to leave the airport with ease.

Before our Europe trip, I took Liam on a little getaway to a friend’s house in Perth, Australia. Although it was a domestic flight, it took 6 hours.

I brought a bunch of toys to keep him entertained during the flight, but with the small tray table, everything kept falling to the floor, and I was busy picking them up. The person sitting next to us even kept handing them back to me!

So, for our Europe trip, I made sure to pack the Stokke Jetkids as a must-have, and it worked out great. It folds down to the size of a palm, so it doesn’t take up much space.

On this trip, we used it a lot when playing with things like LEGO and Play-Doh, and it was super helpful.

The guard in front can be lowered, but Liam decided to block off all sides by himself.

It looked a bit uncomfortable, but I just let him do what he wanted.

I downloaded coloring apps and educational games in advance, and Liam had a great time playing with them on the plane.

Of course, I also downloaded some videos, so a lot of the time was spent with the iPad.
